Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek

Nepal opened the Kanchenjunga region to trekkers in 1988, offering a glimpse into a realm steeped in history and legend. Kanchenjunga (8,586m), the world’s third-highest peak, straddles the border of Nepal and Sikkim, its majestic presence a constant companion on the trek. Local folklore whispers tales of the elusive Yeti inhabiting these remote mountains.

The journey unfolds like a storybook. Begin in the tropical lowlands, teeming with life. Ascend through vibrant rhododendron forests, passing charming villages nestled amidst the eastern Nepal landscape. Higher up, witness glaciers sparkling in the sunlight and experience the overwhelming grandeur of the Himalayas.

Immerse yourself in the rich traditions of the Rai and Limbu people, the indigenous inhabitants of this region. Their warm hospitality and unique way of life, harmonizing with the mountains, create a lasting impression.

The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area protects a diverse range of wildlife. Look out for elusive snow leopards, Himalayan black bears, and the ever-intriguing musk deer. The skies come alive with colorful birds like the Impheyan pheasant and the red-billed blue magpie.

The journey begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Taplejung. From there, the trek winds its way through valleys and villages, offering a glimpse into the local way of life. Challenge yourself with high passes like Selele La and Mirring La, rewarded with breathtaking panoramas. Explore the Yalung Ri Glacier and reach the legendary villages of Ghunsa and Lhonak. Pangpema (5140m), the base camp for expeditions, marks the culmination of the first part of the trek.
